About Me

Hello,

I'm a nonconformist when it comes to countries or culture. Meaning, I don't view where I was born as home by default. I choose my home.

I like cooking, although it is exhausting. I'm fond of video games and music. I like the smell of rain, particularly in green places (Forests, meadows, etc.).

I'm learning Japanese for a few reasons, which I will list below:

- I want to know more languages.

- The more languages you know, the more places you can live, the safer you'll be and feel.

- There's a Japanese novel I want to read. Only one volume in the series is in a language I can read, so to read the rest, I have to read Japanese.

- In my chosen profession, there's a benefit to speaking the language. More job opportunities.

- I like the sound of the language.

- Improve my self-esteem.

- Shinto is interesting.

I have no "Mother tongue" as such. The language I grew up with is Arabic, but despite that, my English is stronger. Since I don't associate with any nation as my identity, I don't associate any one language as my identity.

How much do you know in Japanese?

Before getting on the site, I was using apps for a few months. I started with Duolingo, but I lost interest in it as I advanced. Used a podcast, but having 2 apps used up a lot of time. I wanted a routine that doesn't take too much of my day, or cause stress.

After Duolingo, I picked up Memrise. Been using for maybe... 7 months now? I don't get on it every day though, in an effort to avoid stress (Plus some procrastinating.). I like it, it works for me.

I'm thinking of splitting up the load now. One day I'll be reading what's on here, the next I'll get on Memrise. See if it works. If not, no big deal.

So at the moment I do understand the grammer a little. I can recognise things in speech, I can read Hiragana and Katakana. I can probably survive as a tourist; asking for directions, ordering things, making the barest of small-talk. Though I would still categorize myself as a beginner.

I have no way to comfortably practice speech other than talking to myself, and I don't know enough to talk to myself about anything.

What other languages do you speak?

Arabic, English
