About Me

I'm a professional ESL teacher. I lived in Japan for two years and am now back in the states pursuing a master's in teaching. I learned a bit of Japanese while living in Japan, but I never studied (foolishly). Now, as part of my degree requirements, I have to be proficient in a langauge. I've got about one year to hit intermediate level. 頑張ります!

How much do you know in Japanese?

I am low-beginner in Japanese, but I'm studying several hours every day. I am using this website (just started today), Marugoto Plus, Pimsleur (while driving), Mango Langauges, Pronunciator, and Erin's Challenge.

What other languages do you speak?

French (a bit), English (native)

About Me

Yo. Japanese newbie here. I'm just trying to limp my way through self-teaching Japanese.

One of my biggest challenges is simply doubting my studying methods. Since everyone who teaches Japanese claims their method to be the best, I can't help but get that feeling that I'm not using the best or most efficient method. That said, I'm sticking with IMABI for good, because I really like how complete each lesson is, even if it is dense and overwhelming at times.

Using Wanikani and an Anki deck for vocabulary mostly. I have a lot of problems remembering words and conjugations, even if I've seen them over and over again.

About Me

How much do you know in Japanese?

Somewhat farther advanced than N1. I haven't taken the test.

Knowledge is quite slanted towards reading Visual Novels, light novels, and novels. I've spent at least 1000 hours reading so far. I like to study grammar because it's neccesary to tackle more difficult works. I find being able to understand characters, description, and the author's ideas is very rewarding.

Listening and Production aren't that great.

I can usually tell whether a phrase natural or not, but for many practical phrases, I've forgotten or haven't really heard one of the natural ways to say it. If I ignore avoiding unnaturalness and incorrect address, I can communicate alright.
